Latvia in 1987 was emerging from nearly 50 years of soviet occupation and within 4 years would again be an independent nation. This blog is a transcription of notes prepared soon after my first visit there in June 1987.

It is never too late to blog!
On 20 June 1987, Anita and I arrived in Latvia. It was my first trip. Anita had been in Latvia in 1976 but had not returned. Latvia was part of the Soviet Union. Six days before we arrived in Riga, there had been a major gathering at the Freedom Monument. It was the first major public demonstration of Latvian nationalism. Another 4 years saw Latvia as an independent nation after 50 years of occupation. In August 1987, Anita and I took part in an anti-soviet demonstration at the Berlin Wall. The following year the wall came down. These were dramatic times. Fortunately, I recorded our activities in Latvia in a long handwritten letter I wrote to a colleague as we left Latvia. This is the first time it has been typed and published, or even read by more than a handful of people.
